When a group of the ?Lost Boys? of Sudan came to Charlotte in 2001, one of them, David Thon, ended up with Carl Phillips and his wife, Nina. The couple mentored David (and at times other refugees) as he adjusted to a completely foreign lifestyle and they helped him pursue an education in the U.S.
